Purpose of the roof soffit. During house construction fascia boards are fastened to the ends of the rafters called rafter tails before the roofing and gutters are installed. Its archetypal form sometimes incorporating or implying the projection of beams is the underside of eaves to connect a retaining wall to projecting edge s of the roof. Soffits are actually part of the cornice or eave the point where the roof projection and the side walls of the building meet.

Soffit serves both an aesthetic and functional purpose for a building s roofing system. It s the skin that covers your eaves without it you would see your rafter beams fully exposed. The roof soffit has many purposes for your home. A gable roof has a cornice along the side walls formed at the rafter ends.

For starters it can improve your property s overall aesthetic appeal as it covers up your eaves preventing your rafter from being completely exposed. Hip roofs have a continuous cornice that extends completely around the building. Soffits appear anywhere a roof extends beyond the walls by more than a few inches.
